Journey back to Denver

After another fabulous American Breakfast at "Pete's Place" in Cody the one and a half hour  morning journey to Thermopolis was uneventful except for a good view of a small herd of Prong Horned antelopes! Thermopolis State Park made a lovely stop. The Hot Pool was relaxing but we felt rather old. The Hot Spring itself is huge and very much like the Mammoth Main Terrace in Yellowstone. A lunch break overlooking the hot and breezy Wind River Basin, an hour or so further on, reminded us of the hardy settlers who conquered this arid land. Huge road works at Muddy Gap were reminiscent of those experienced earlier in our holiday near Manila.

Saratoga, where we spent the night, is tiny with the one interesting building being The Wolf Hotel! We stayed nearby at the Sage and Sand Motel as The Wolf was full. After a decent meal at "Stumpy's" we did a very silly thing and went in the dark to the Hot Spring pool to find another 8 people had had the same idea - amazing gazing at the stars in water of 112 degrees F. Next morning we treated ourselves to Eggs Benedict at "Lollypops" (quite smart) and then another dip in the pool before the journey back to Denver. This took us up to 10,847 feet in the Snowy Mountains to view the 12,013 Medicine Bow Peak, before dropping down to the plain and a drive through boring Laramie - despite it being the location of the University of Wyoming.  Lunch was in the pretty Virginia Dale a little further on, an important stop on the Overland Trail. A detour after Fort Collins took us up the Thompson Canyon to see the big resort of Estes Park in Rocky Mountain National Park, and then it was all downhill  back to dull and modern Louisville near Denver for our last night in the USA.
