This shot hardly does credit to the Mother Temple of Bali, Besakih. It is the focal point for all Balinese people and was busy with ceremonies when we walked around. Rol wore his own Sarong as shorts are not allowed. Notice the black and white checked cloth wrapped around the ugly statue; he scares away the demons. This cloth represents the balance between good and evil. In Balinese mythology neither side ever wins. We bartered for the "guide" who was probably compulsory, though we weren't sure. They tried to get $25 each out of us but we settled for the "going rate" as recommended by the wonderfull Rough Guide of  20,000 rupiah per person (about £1.15), and shared the guide with a couple from Italy. Situated high on Mount Agung it is often shrouded in cloud so there were sadly no stunning views. We stopped here after Tirtagangga.
